As I write this I see massive black smoke clouds billowing from behind the bushland which lies adjacent to my home and stretches into the vast area of Mungo Brush. This is the second time in my life that my husband and I feel like we are totally at the mercy of the awesome forces of nature.
The first time, whilst still living in Sydney, the fire came to within 5 kms of our house, which was also located next to very dense bushland. Sitting on a neighbour’s roof one night we watched in horror as, far too close, huge flames leapt from tree to tree, exploding into massive fire balls. It was a terrifying sight and one I hoped with all my heart I would never have to witness again.
With helicopters flying overhead and police cars driving up and down the roads warning us to prepare for an evacuation, it felt like we were living in a war zone. All I can do at this moment in time is pray that we will again be spared the horror of losing our home and all our worldly possessions.
Naturally, as we all live in the potential path of this bushfire, I pray the same for everyone and wish with every fibre of my being that you and your homes will also be safe. Expressing this wish I, no doubt, speak for every one of our Committee members. Our thoughts are with each and every one of you as well as with our entire local community.
Stay safe,
Sonja
